Content in Course Outcomes

*          Enrolment and Course Introduction

Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the correct fit and application of safety protective clothing.

Assessment Criteria:

  • Check student has and wears protective safety clothing
  • Check student can demonstrate that clothing fits and is worn correctly to the appropriate standards

Theory Sessions:

Tested by short answer written questions in class.  The theory sessions include the following criteria;

Maintenance:

Assessment Criteria:

  • Pre-ride check list
  • Owner regular maintenance listed and a schedule developed
  • Dealer Service items
  • Motorbike faults identified, basic adjustments completed
  • Motorbike roadworthy criteria
  • Detail in a written list how to clean a motorbike
  • Cockpit Drill controls identified and named, the functions of each control described

Defensive Riding Theory and Skills:

Assessment Criteria:

  • Defensive riding skills listed
  • Knowledge of road statistics
  • Crash analysis leading to crash avoidance techniques
  • Contingency planning while riding (ie.Plan B if something goes wrong)
  • Plan a journey route and an alternative to avoid an accident etc.

Practical Sessions

Riding Skills – ‘off road’

Assessment Criteria:

Rider posture /position / head-eye level correctly demonstrated

  • Correct mounting / dismounting procedure
  • Correct cold and hot engine starting procedures
  • Correct engine stopping procedure
  • Correct moving off procedure
  • Static work and manoeuvres (slalom, figure 8’s, and marked course)
  • Correct braking procedure
  • Correct reaction braking procedure
  • Correct counter-steering manoeuvres
  • Correct evasive action technique

Riding Skills – ‘on road’

Assessment Criteria:

  • All riding skills including manoeuvres, defensive riding skills and roadcraft (attitude)
  • Correct general road riding including a demonstrated use of all road rules.
